Sonique, the BRIT-award winning singer and DJ, is going back in the operating room for another lumpectomy. Her first operation for breast cancer was done only a week after it's discovery. Only 40 years old, Sonique, whose real name is Sonia Clark, must have more cancer removed. Her lymph nodes were found to contain cancer, so there is a possibility of metastasis. Because of her lymph node status, Sonique faces several months of chemotherapy. It is not yet known where else her cancer may have spread, but since she is wasting no time in getting treatment for it, I hope she has a good chance at beating this. Sonique had planned to release a new single and tour Europe this summer, but with extra surgery and possible chemo, her plans are now on hold. As a young woman, she faces the prospect of aggressive breast cancer - and as a black women, she is at increased risk for Triple Negative breast cancer. I'm no celebrity, but I remember wanting all the privacy I could get about my diagnosis and treatment. Sonique is a public figure, and will have a hard time getting privacy during her treatment. Let's hope her fans will be supportive and respectful as she battles this disease.

British pop star, singer and DJ Sonique has had surgery for breast cancer at a private hospital in central London. Sonique, whose real name is Sonia Clark, was born in north London to a mother who favored Motown music. She began singing and training as an athlete at age 6, and her physical training shows in her well-toned figure. Sonique began recording as a teenager, writing songs and singing at clubs with different bands. In 2001, she was awarded the Best British Female Solo Artist.

Sonique's spokesman Stuart Watts said that her surgery was "a matter of urgency". She was diagnosed with breast cancer and scheduled her surgery one week later. Watts said the artist is in "stable condition" following her surgery and will "await further results over the next 48 hours from her doctors." Sonique, 40, plans to remain in the hospital until Saturday. Her concert dates and the planned release of her new single, 'World Of Change' will be delayed until she is feeling better.

Sonique joins other young women singers who have fought - and survived breast cancer: Kylie Minogue, Sheryl Crow, Bif Naked, Anastacia and Olivia Newton-John.

H1N1 Swine Flu Declared a Pandemic - Take Precautions

Thursday June 11, 2009
HINI Swine Flu has been declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization. If you're in treatment for breast cancer, you should be taking extra precautions. Chemotherapy treatments can lower your immune system and cause you to be neutropenic. You won't be able to fight against germs as well as you normally would. Avoid situations where germs are likely to be plentiful. When your blood counts return to normal, just use common sense to keep away from germs. Here's some ways to take precautions:
  • Stay home whenever possible. Delegate tasks, ask for help.
  • If you develop a fever of 100.5F or higher, call your doctor immediately and drink plenty of fluids.
  • Cough or sneeze into a tissue and then toss it out, or turn your face into the crook of your elbow, to contain any germs.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water or alcohol sanitizer - this will kill most germs.
  • Avoid people who have any flu-like symptoms.
  • If you feel flu symptoms starting, don't wait - call your doctor or nurse practitioner and ask for advice or an appointment.
Radiation treatments for breast cancer can cause swallowing problems, coughing, or shortness of breath. This is because radiation may affect your esophagus, throat, or lungs. Let your doctor know, if you're having these problems. This kind of cough is not a flu symptom, but if you are concerned about your cough or any other symptoms, such as fatigue, pain, or skin changes, you should ask your doctor for help.

Know someone with a love of all things pink and wants to support breast cancer education? My iPod is pink, and I've just heard about these cool little pink ear buds. These are YSC/iPopperz ear buds, with two pretty pink crystalline jewels on the earpieces and a high-quality, pink enamel ribbon set in the center wire of the ear bud. YSC stands for Young Survival Coalition - a group that works to educate young women about breast health and breast cancer. For every $19.95 YSC/iPopperz ear bud that is sold, KoNo Enterprises will donate 10 percent of the retail purchase price to YSC. This will help YSC fund their work raising young women’s awareness about breast cancer. “The YSC’s continuing efforts to bring programs and education to young women affected by breast cancer will be greatly enhanced by the funds raised from YSC’s partnership with KoNo Enterprises,” said Marcia Stein, CEO, YSC. These earbuds come with a plug that works with most MP3 players, CD and DVD players, as well as laptop computers and any cell phone that takes a standard 3.5mm plug. Your ears and my ears are probably different sizes, but that's okay because these little ear buds come with 3 sizes of ear pads - so you could customize the fit just for yourself! These would make a nice birthday gift or a gift for a friend who is just starting treatment for breast cancer. Or maybe you just need a little giftie for yourself - a gift that also gives a donation to help raise awareness about breast cancer.
